Cosmopolitan Magazine Austin Street Style Outtakes

image

Back in February of last year, I checked my e-mail and scoffed at a message I thought was surely junk mail titled “COSMOPOLITAN AUSTIN STREET STYLE.” I reluctantly opened it, wondering how my spam filters let this one slip by. To my chagrin, it was in fact an e-mail from Cosmopolitan Magazine's Senior Photo Editor, asking if I would be interested in shooting street style for an Austin edition of their monthly features “What's on Your Mind?” and “Keeping it Real Beauty.” With shakey fingers, I quickly responded with my phone number and was on the phone with Cosmo editors minutes later. Over the course of two days in February, I shot some of Austin's most stylish ladies on South Congress, East Sixth Street, and Manor Road, while two Cosmo writers interviewed the girls on their daily beauty regimens and what was currently occupying their thoughts.

I had a fantastic time shooting all of these wonderful women, and though my photos were only expected to be in one issue, they ended up using my photos in three more issues after that, as well as some international versions of Cosmo! You can check out a few of the issues my photos were featured in here. I was floored by how well-received my pictures were and I am so grateful the Cosmo staff gave me this amazing opportunity!

Check out all my outtakes from the shoots after the jump!

Austin Fashion Week 2012: Bow Down to the Boudoir Queen

I was looking forward to many events during this year’s Austin Fashion Week, but there was no event I was anticipating more than the Boudoir Queen runway show debuting their new ready to wear collection at the Driskill on Thursday, August 16.

Dawn Younger-Smith, former model, muse, and make-up artist to the stars, is the artist behind the line Boudoir Queen. After years of working in the fashion industry as a make up artist and developing her own cosmetics line, Poor Little Rich Girl, her sense of style and affinity for the past turned her to designing her own vintage inspired pieces. In 1997, the Boudoir Queen brand was born, and Dawn began creating ’20s and ’30s-inspired pieces using vintage fabrics. Her long list of celebrity clients includes names like Patty Griffin, The Veronicas, The Citizens Band, and Imogen Heap. She has also had some of her designs featured in editorials and ads in the likes of Vogue, Elle Magazine, and Rolling Stone.

With such a long list of prior achievements, you can only imagine how anxious I was, fidgeting in my seat waiting for the show to begin, so that I could finally see some of Dawn’s exquisite pieces in person. It didn’t help that some of the models were teasing me with their behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram.

Austin Fashion Week 2012: Joie De Vintage Fashion Show

If you were not at Joie De Vie on Saturday night, you missed out on Joie De Vintage - an amazing all vintage fashion show including pieces from ElectricFrenchie.com's "Time Capsule" collection.  The collection was curated by Shari Gerstenberger of Charm School Vintage and Erika Pinktipps.  The show featured vintage looks from the 1950s-1970s styled with modern flair by wardrobe stylist and local fashionista Jenny Woys.  As if these perfect vintage pieces weren’t enough eye candy for everyone, floral accessories by Bloomers were added to make each outfit even more engaging.

Although the amount of people packed into Joie De Vie made the temperature comparable to that of a sauna, I forgot all about how hot and sweaty I was as soon as the first model stepped out on the runway.

Dressing the Sound: Westen Borghesi of The White Ghost Shivers

If you’ve ever been to White Ghost Shivers show or shimmied to some sixties tunes at the Second Sunday Sock Hop, you’ve probably noticed a seven-foot-tall dapperly dressed gentleman directing the madness.   This well-dressed gent’s name is Westen Borghesi, and there’s no arguing that he is one of the most stylish male musicians in Austin.
